How to set up an eSIM on your iPhone

Once you have your eSIM card, follow the instructions for your iPhone running iOS 12.1 or newer to finish the set up.

What you need to set up an eSIM on your iPhone

To set up an eSIM on your iPhone, make sure you have:

  1. An iPhone running iOS 12.1 or newer such as:
    • iPhone XS
    • iPhone XS Max
    • iPhone XR
  2. A chatr eSIM card.
  3. An active cellular data or WiFi connection.

For an eSIM-only iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, you can activate the eSIM without WiFi during setup.

How to set up an eSIM on your iPhone

To set up an eSIM on your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 12.1 or a newer version.
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
  3. Select Use QR Code. This will automatically open the camera app on your iPhone.
  4. Use your iPhone to scan the QR code on the eSIM card. Once recognized, your eSIM will automatically begin downloading.

What to do if your eSIM card isn’t scanning or is unrecognized by your iPhone

If your iPhone isn't scanning or recognizing the eSIM card, you won't be able to manually set it up. To fix this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to the internet. If you're using the eSIM as your only line, connect to a WiFi network with internet access to complete the activation.
  2. Check if there's anything blocking the camera lens and ensure the entire QR code is visible in the camera's viewfinder.
