U.S. 3G/HSPA networks shutting down

As of July 1, 2022: U.S. carriers started gradually shutting down their 3G wireless networks. If travelling and roaming in the U.S. during this transition, you are no longer guaranteed roaming cellular services including 9-1-1. Once the shut down of these networks is completed, you won’t be able to roam on cellular networks and to make or receive wireless calls (including 911 calls), text messages or use cellular data while in the US (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands).

Who is impacted by the shutdown?

All chatr customers.

Will the shutdowns impact my service in Canada?

No. You can still use your service as you normally do while in Canada.

What do I need to do if I want to roam in the US?

  • chatr customers will experience reduced US roaming as US wireless providers started to shut down their 3G/HSPA networks beginning July 1, 2022 until shut down is fully completed.
  • If you wish to roam in the US, you'll need to sign up for a monthly plan with Fido or Rogers and have a VoLTE roaming-capable device. Call 1-(800)-485-9745 to review all your options.

I don't plan on roaming in the US. Do I need to do anything?

If you are certain you won’t be using your device in the US, you don’t need to do anything. Remember, if you change your mind, your phone might not work if you try to roam in the U.S. during the transition period, and won’t work once the shut down is completed.
